neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
I have just one note to pass on today...a giving opportunity our neighbor Eva O'Brien is coordinating:

We are collecting used DVDs to donate to the local VA Hospital.  Would you mind sending an email to the hood asking anyone who wants to donate used dvds that they no longer want. The movies will be for soldiers to watch so no "kid" movies please. They can put them on my back porch at 1424 Cambridge Dr. - we have a For Sale sign out front.  We are collecting until Wednesday the 21st.

I would like to wish you all a very Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas! The neighborhood is looking quite festive with all the lights up. Enjoy this season with your family and friends. (:

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
Hope you all had a relaxing Thanksgiving...I'm thankful for the beautiful neighborhood that we live in! Please see the note below from Valerie Costa about a fundraiser for the WHS Robotics team. Some of you may have had students on the team...it is a great activity to support. And maybe you really like to play Bingo! (:

Also, a neighbor reminded me to let you know that Wegman's grocery store is coming to us at the Montgomery Mall! Did you see this article in the paper? http://articles.philly.com/2011-11-16/news/30406078_1_wegmans-spokeswoman-jo-natale-boscov-wegmans-food-markets

PRESS RELEASE

November 11, 2011

On Nov 5th at 10:00 am police received information from the parents of two juvenile males regarding a suspicious incident that occurred in the 600 block of Cathcart Rd. The boys reported to their parents that while they were walking along, a tan mid-sized car drove past the boys, and then turned around.  The driver, described as a white male in his 30's or 40's, short salt and pepper hair, with an Irish accent asked the boys to get into his car. The boys ran home and reported the incident to their parent.

After this incident was reported, police received information regarding two other suspicious vehicles driving through different neighborhoods in Whitpain Township. The first suspicious vehicle occurred on Sunday Nov 6th at approximately 3:00 pm and was described as a tan or gold vehicle, possibly a Taurus with driver door damage, driving slowly in the 800 block of Valley Road. The driver was described as an older, possibly a w/m with a darker complexion.

The second incident occurred two weeks prior to the incident on Cathcart Rd. In that incident a homeowner reported a gray or cream colored vehicle was driving slowly in the area of the 1500 block of Penllyn Pk. The driver of this vehicle was reported as a w/m approximately 40 yrs old and the resident stated that it appeared as if he was staring at her 10 year old son. No children were approached or spoken to in either of the second two incidents. Whitpain Township Police are requesting that anyone with additional information regarding these incident, to please contact the Police Department at 610-279-9033.

Parents are asked to speak to their children about safety tips for when they are out.  Stay with friends while outside playing, don't talk with strangers, don't ever get into a car with someone that you do not know,  if someone is following them either by foot or in a car, run in another direction. If someone does approach them, make sure they report it to you or another trusted adult. Additional safety tips can be found at www.missingkids.com, the website for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
Please remember that our annual Halloween parade  will take place this Sunday, 10/30 from 3:30 - 4:30 in the Turnbury cul de sac. Heather has had a good response so far, with at least 35 children attending, but there are definitely some families out there that still haven't responded.  Please see the flyer attached for information. Heather would appreciate an RSVP email to her so she can be sure to have enough food and supplies.

Another note:

Dear neighbors,
See below for notes on the Supervisors meeting last week. Many thanks to Linda Callegari for attending and writing this up. Please note that you are encouraged to express your opinions to the Supervisors but there will not be a meeting arranged for us at the entryway. I will write separately with information about the landscaping and signs for the new entryway.

I've also copied a note below from Kathi Mignone about her jewelry business - call her about holiday gifts!

Carol,
Just returned from the Township Supervisor's meeting and thought I'd jot a few notes down to share with neighbors:

  • Rep. Kate Harper was there and she provided us with information about the sound barriers & what she could find out from Penndot on very little notice.
  • According to Kate, Penndot says that the red walls are made of a special material that is designed to reflect the noise since sound will bounce between the two red walls. The roughness of the red brick is part of this sound abatement and therefore, possibly painting them beige would take away the benefit they now have. Kate will ask Penndot about this.
  • The beige walls are not designed to the same specifications as the red walls as they do not need to be as reflective of the sound since there are no walls on the Upper Gwynedd side at that location.
  • Kate indicated that the current beige walls will be painted red to match the current red brick walls. Evidently, the contract for the paint and labor was let a year ago so it's already in the pipeline and would be expensive to change the order. A neighbor asked whether Penndot would be painting in the white areas to make it look like the same brick as on the current red walls. Kate will check into this.
  • The Township thought that as long as the neighborhood was happy with the beige walls on the inside, we would not care one way or another what the road side looked like. They indicated that it was a decision that the Supervisors, Larry Comunale and Upper Gwynedd made with Penndot. One of our neighbors remembers that Penndot indicated that the road side would be a different color/texture.
  • Kate indicated that Penndot estimates that it would cost $55,000 to paint the red brick walls beige. This is just a quick estimate and not a firm quote. Due to budget issues, she does  not think they would be willing to spend the money needed to do this. The Supervisors were not sure that Upper Gwynedd would want to paint the walls beige.
  • There will be no meeting at the walls with the Supervisors at this point. For those who provided an email at the meeting, the Supervisors will stay in touch with them with the answers that Kate is checking into.
  • There were several neighbors present who voiced no problem with the color of the walls. The Township indicated that Upper Gwynedd has not had any complaints from their citizens about the sound barriers at all.
  • Kate indicated that we should be glad that we have sound barriers and don't get all upset by the color. She pointed out that sound barriers are very expensive and Penndot is trying to cut down on the use of them wherever they can so we need to be mindful that we are lucky to have them.
  • Neither Kate nor the Supervisors knew that the landscape plan from Penndot only provided landscaping & ivy in front of the current beige walls. That the red brick walls will only have ivy planted at the base (street side only).

I'm sorry I could not offer a more positive report. There were about 8 Gwynedd Knoll residents present at the meeting tonight. I don't know if more people would have made a difference in the outcome, but certainly it couldn't have hurt. I encourage you all to send an email to the Supervisors and Kate Harper about how you feel about the sound barriers. They are getting very divergent comments pro and con and so it is not clear in their minds about how we feel. I guess it couldn't get much worse for those of us who hate the red walls.

neighborhood news sound walls

Dear neighbors,
Please see the note below from Linda Callegari. Linda has been heading up the traffic and 202 issues committee for us. She is proposing a meeting and email campaign to change the color of the sound walls. Please read her suggestions and note her email and phone to respond directly to her if you wish to.

I have received many notes from neighbors that are unhappy with the red color walls. One clarification - the township has said in a note since I sent out the last one that ivy will be planted on the walls so the red color will be muted by the green.

I hope you will take the time to read up and act on this issue.
Carol Pfister

Dear Gwynedd Knoll neighbors,

I have been watching the emails fly all over concerning the red sound barriers on 202 and I thought perhaps a coordinated response from individual homeowners in our hood would get the Supervisor's attention and appropriate response. I must say, they always have responded to our requests for meetings and so if we all ask for a meeting at Hancock & 202 some weeknight next week, I'm sure they will oblige. I think it will be absolutely essential that we get an overwhelming turnout to demonstrate our very real concern and our commitment to follow this issue long term. I also think every neighbor needs to send an email/letter to the Supervisors indicating some of the concerns I've outlined below. Certainly, there are other points to be made, but accountability for their decisions on 202, the sound barrier issue, etc.are theirs alone and with this upcoming election, we need to remind them that they "serve" this neighborhood as well as the rest of the Township.

I looked thru my old emails and can find only one Supervisor email. Here are the names of the LGT supervisors and their term expirations (FYI):

Kathleen Hunsicker (12/31/11)

Dr. Richard Booth (12/31/11)

Stephen Paccione (12/31/13)

Mark Grey (12/31/15)

Edward Brandt (12/31/15)

There is virtually no information out there in the local news about who these two supervisors are, what they stand for, what they feel the issues are, how responsive they'll be to their constituents, if things get pissy, I think we need to become a bit more vocal and I would like to think our hood will be willing to speak up and write to these individuals & perhaps the Ambler Gazette.

If you remember, when we asked the Twp to install the barricade at Hancock & 202, both Supervisors Paccione & Grey came out one morning and met with several of the moms in the hood at a time when the kids were standing out there so they could see for themselves the danger in having speeding commuters flying thru our hood. That was a good sign.

I think the vulnerable individuals are Booth and Hunsicker, whom I have never seen in this hood or heard a peep out of either of them on any of our concerns. At meetings where they have been present, you never hear them say anything. I believe Hunsicker is the Vice Chairman of the Supervisors and I think she needs to justify why we should vote for her at this point. She brings nothing to the table for any of her constituents. She basically is a quiet majority vote.

Bottom line, I think we need to contact them all individually with emails and ask them to respond individually so we don't get this group response with no accountability. It's time that they get from behind this group stand and give us a reason to continue to support their future terms on the board. Be prepared to respond to the group response and ask each to reply.

The township website does not offer individual emails for them, but rather lists a generic email for all of them:

supervisors@lowergwynedd.org However, I do have Stephen Paccione's township email: spaccione@lowergwynedd.org . I would think if we email the rest using that format, we can reach them, although Larry C. did tell me that not every supervisor has an email and so he prints them, batches them, and send them hard copies in the mail.

Key points I think we need to make with these people in an email:

1. Obviously, we do not want the red brick, but rather a beige color that should coordinate with the entire run of the sound barriers on the LGT side. If it is about the surface and having a way for the ivy to "grab" onto the walls, just look at the blue route and their beige walls with tons of ivy growing all over!

2. We should point out that while Penndot views the 202 project at this intersection as two distinct sections, the Township should have recognized this and their job was to make sure there was continuity and conformity of appearance and design. We understand there have been periodic meetings with Penndot and the other interested towns in this section and they represent us and the township at these meetings and should  have been advocating for us, as I'm sure they will say they have been. Our response can then be, why did we have to put in writing to Penndot that we needed some of the shrubs to be moved as a base planting for our entrance and why did we have to ask their Project Managers to correct the disparity between the two sound barriers. One was curved and the other slanted! In my mind, this is what the township should have done on our behalf!~ It then opens the door for us to ask for periodic updates from the Township & coordination with  us on upcoming decisions, before they are made!

3. We should request a meeting with the supervisors at the Hancock entrance this coming week to let us hear from each of them. Most likely, they will send just two, but I think it will speak volumes if it's Paccione & Grey again. In that case, we should  seriously consider why Hunsicker & Booth deserve a second chance. I think having them there looking at those red walls with a large crowd of neighbors will make it very hard for them to cross us. We will have to get the hood out for this to make sure they understand that we all don't like this situation...crowd!!!

4. There is not enough communication with the Township on this project. It isn't like they don't know how to reach us all. Unless we have initiated the request for a meeting, none happens. This is not acceptable. Again, do the supervisors think that unless the constituents request a meeting or contact, they don't owe us the courtesy of informing us of important updates or opportunities to have input on major decisions that affect us? We already have an active committee that contacts Larry C. with issues now and in the past.  This mess is not for our lack of interest, but rather their lack of understanding/recognition that their constituents want to be active participants in decisions that affect the value of the homes here, the quality of life for the people who live here, and the safety and well being of anyone in the township who drives through our neighborhood. Based on this issue alone, we should demand regular, periodic meetings with the supervisors (whomever they choose to be the point people) that are open to all of us in the hood. This issue just blatingly points out that we cannot assume they are acting on our behalf.

5. We should ask them what they are doing to secure funding of the 500 feet that will not be widened at this time. I feel that while we all know there is no funding, it is important for them to acknowledge the problem and give us their plans on what they will do to make sure that our neighborhood remains residential with little cut thru traffic when the project is completed. I think they need to lay out what they have done so far, who they have been talking to, and what each of them feels is needed to be done in light of this situation. According to Larry C. the traffic light at Meetinghouse is tied into the funding for that 500 feet too so this issue goes beyond our hood, it affects all those on Meetinghouse & Foulkways too.

I hope this helps everyone to focus on the essential issues, develop their own personal approach to the problem, and act now. I am home over the weekend and will check my email if anyone wishes to "converse" further. You can also reach me at 215-699-8472 (home).

neighborhood news - 202

Dear neighbors,
Please see the 3 notes below regarding 3 issues related to the 202 construction in our neighborhood. If you have not been on 202 at Hancock lately, take a drive or walk over...the sound walls are going up and they are BIG! Several neighbors have been corresponding with the township - I have tried to summarize what I have heard below. Please keep me informed if you have information you would like to share. Many thanks to Linda Callegari who continues to speak up and request information and followup on promises for our neighborhood!

Thank you,

1. The sound wall appearance: some of the walls have a red brick color and some have a tan color. This note from the township manager explains they will be painted to match - in the red brick color.

Bill-

I left you a message earlier-  What you are calling the 3rd Phase of Sound Walls are being installed and when installed will be painted "in place" to provide uniformity to the entire section.  They will be red brick similar to the previously installed sections as planned.

2. The section of 202 from Sumneytown Pike to Hancock is called 65S. It is the only section that will be 2 lanes instead of widened to 4. We have expressed concerns many times over the last few years. This is the latest answer when Linda Callegari asked for the status.

Subject: RE: To. 202 Question

Linda,

A meeting with the Secretary of Transportation is being scheduled this fall, date TBD, to press our case for Section 65S to move forward.  Representatives from impacted municipalities have been invited.  I do not know the ramifications of splitting up the 65S Project as you suggest but we have gotten the same answer when we have suggested that same thing.  It is all about funding.  There is none.  It is also impacting the installation of a traffic signal at 202 and Meetinghouse.   We will keep you posted of any new developments.  I can assure you the Township will continue to stress the importance of completing 65S to our legislators and to PennDOT.

Larry

3. The widening of Welsh Rd and 202, which affects completion of the project and our entryways. PennDot has promised to put plantings at our Hancock entrance when they are done.

Neighbors...I know we are all so tired from the lack of work being done on moving those telephone poles on 202, so I asked my contact to get an update on when we might see some real movement on the project and when we should plan to see our entrance plants put in. I think based upon his response, we have plenty of time to fund raise for new signs so they are ready to go when the plants go in. Hope this helps.

 Linda Callegari

    Claudia Way

Linda - As I suspected, the plantings usually are done toward the end of the project. The area you inquired about should be done the next spring, though some of the final plantings may not be put in until September 2012.

Ah, those persistent poles. I do know that Verizon has been out there moving/splicing the wires which is the first step in getting the poles moved. I checked on the pole status last week, and as of the last schedule update provided by Verizon last week, they have the poles on Welsh being moved by mid-October and the poles on DeKalb moved by the end of the month. If they keep to this schedule, the contractor can get back out there right behind them to finish up the widening on the north side of Welsh and the east side of DeKalb. As I said, the presence of Verizon on the job is a good sign.

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
I have copied below the responses I received about basement waterproofing suggestions. Hope you find them helpful.

I also got news that another car was vandalized in a neighbor's driveway, during the day this time! The window was broken into...fortunately nothing very valuable was in the car. Please continue to lock your cars and call police if you see something suspicious.

See below for a note about a cat that needs a foster home for 6 months...sounds perfect for that child who wants a cat desperately but might tire of taking care of it in six months. (: See if you can help out....

There will be another Garage sale this weekend! Eva O'Brien at 1424 Cambridge Dr. and Sally Weinstein at 1288 Turnbury will have treasures out for you on Saturday, Sept 17 from 8 to 12.  Hope you can stop by!

We are looking for a temporary "foster home" for our daughter's 2 year old cat. Bennie is small, neutered, black and white cat with a sweet, affectionate temperament. He is current on all of his shots. Our daughter is moving home for approximately 6 months and we would gladly have Bennie stay with us if it were not for our dogs. Two of them are not cat-friendly. If anyone is interested and willing to consider taking Bennie during this time, we would be so grateful.  We would pick up cost of food, litter and any vet expenses that might occur. Please contact Marissa Weber at 267-240-4580 or Sue Weber at 215-699-4205

Basement suggestions:

Carol,  Fran's sump pump is too small for the volume of water coming into her basement slab drain system.  It will probably take a second pump or a bigger pump to correct.  To really be safe you need two pumps, each one with enough capacity to keep up with the water coming in.  Outside drains become really expensive as does waterproofing.  The basic problem is that these houses all sit on shale and water runs quite nicely through shale.  Some are even built on hedge rows which were formerly part of the farmer's drain system.

I am considering putting in an emergency, natural gas fired electrical back up system to power the sump pump, security system, refrigerator, gas water heater and hot air heater igniters and fans.  You can also add the stove igniter and microwave.  In this last storm, had we had a power failure our basement would have surely flooded again.

These can be purchased on line at Electric Generators Direct, www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com and installed, in our case by our HVAC Contractor that also does work at the plant.  A 7KW unit is about $1900 plus installation.  You can put in larger units if you want to include the Air Conditioning.

We used STA-DRY in this house and our last house that was flooded by Hurricane Floyd…Loved them!!
609-344-3300 based in NJ.  From Rhona Fromm

We had flooding in our basement about 7-8 years ago. We chose Mid-Atlantic Waterproofing to install the French drain/double 36" crocks and double sump pumps around the interior perimeter of our basement. http://www.basements.com/

We have had good success with their system. However, I learned to keep an eye on the pumps and battery back-up with up-to-date models & warranty AND to check them for operation several times a year, regardless of how well they appear to be working. One of the pumps failed 2 ½ years ago and water did come in to the basement, teaching me the "keep checking" lesson.

If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer what I can.

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
Do you think it will ever stop raining?? Hard to believe that about a month ago we were so dry and wishing for rain.....hope your basements are ok. Please see the note below from Fran, who unfortunately did get water in her basement and would like a recommendation for someone to water proof it. If you had trouble also lately, please let me know and we can compare notes. That last storm was the biggest in a long time so was an exception but would be good to help each other out with information now.

I also got a note about some more vandalism at a house on Uxbridge - damage done to a car parked on the street. It was reported to police. Do let me know if you have any trouble at your house...and continue to report any strange activity to the police.

I got a note from Karen Freeman that she and Tom have sold their home and will be moving to Florida for most of the year. I will really miss Karen - she has been very involved in neighborhood activities as a real estate agent and neighbor. She hosted many progressive dinners and many Christmas parties through the years. She has been a real champion of our beautiful neighborhood when needed and always had an answer to my questions. Many thanks for all that you have done, Karen!  She and Tom are hosting a moving sale this Saturday, Sept 10, starting at 8:00.  They have some nice antiques, some misc. furniture, a complete set of Minton china, the Bellemeade pattern with a service for 12, never used, and lots of odds and ends..  Hope you can stop by.

On the subject of garage sales...Eva O'Brien would like to try again for a sale - the last one got rained out. Anyone interested in joining in next weekend, the 17th? Please let me know if you would like to.

Lastly, I was driving out along 202 today and found that the sound walls have begun to go up south of our Hancock entrance! Looks like they will curve around into the entry way. I don't get out that way often so was surprised. Is anyone having issues with the construction, other than the obvious noise involved?

Thank you,

Carol-
Can you please email the neighborhood to see if anyone has a basement waterproofing company that they would HIGHLY recommend? We had a flood after Irene, the sump pump never stopped working, so we, obviously, want to find out why and ensure that it never happens again. :)
Thanks and I hope you had a great summer -

Hi, Carol.
Would you mind sending the following pictures to the neighbors to see if anyone is interested in our master bathroom countertops?  We are changing the color scheme in our bathroom and do not want the current countertops in the landfill because they are in perfect condition.
If anyone is interested they can email me at fkaminsk@yahoo.com or call us at 215-699-2925 for further details.
Thanks.

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
Hope you are enjoying your summer and managing to stay cool in the very hot weather. I have two different messages below...one regarding "free granite countertops" (yes, I typed that correctly) and the other another warning about security in the neighborhood. Some neighbors of mine had a real scare recently - please remember to call the police if you see anything or anyone suspicious - and lock up your cars at night!

On a lighter note: the Pennypacker Mills park is hosting an event this weekend. They are always lots of fun...take your family and have a good time! Check on the website for details.
"In the Good Old Summertime"
event at Pennypacker Mills
Saturday, August 6th 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

From Marylou on corner of Tanglewood and Cambridge:
I don't know if you had heard yet, but we had an incident at our house last night.  At about 4:00 a.m. we were awakened by incredible noise - our front doorknocker being "knocked" very hard - it sounded like someone was going to break the door down.  It was really frightening - my husband and I  both jumped out of bed and my husband immediately hit the "Panic" code on our alarm system so it went off and I'm assuming, scared away the pranksters (I'm not sure what else to call them).  The police came, looked around and didn't see anyone - I'm sure when they heard the alarm they ran.  They had thrown broken eggs on the front stoop but fortunately no other damage.
The police came back this morning to talk to us and told us that 1409 Tanglewood was also hit - and with much more damage.  They had large rocks thrown through their garage window, damaging their car, and another large rock thrown through their garage door.  I'm not sure if there was any other damage.  The police said the homeowners did not call last night but they said today they did hear something.
I just wanted to be sure you knew this - and the police officers all encouraged us and all our neighbors to please call them if anything in the neighborhood looks strange - cars that don't belong, people who don't seem quite right, etc. The police also said, even if a someone in the neighborhood has something as simple as a flat tire - don't assume it's innocent - call them to take a look.  They said they have "loads of time", for the most  part, to follow up on such things and any help we can give, can maybe prevent such things from happening.  They also suggested leaving outside lights on at night.

Traffic Alert:
Left Turn Lanes at Routes 202/63 Intersection to
Open Tuesday Afternoon

After a light construction schedule for Independence Day week, PennDOT crews are back at it with a full schedule next week.

Route 202
Here's some good news! Crews are scheduled to wrap up work to establish left turn lanes at two approaches to the intersection of Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) and Route 63 (Welsh Road) this week. Weather permitting, flaggers will direct a single lane of traffic in each direction through the intersection on Monday and Tuesday, July 11-12, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The turning lanes are expected to be operational on Tuesday afternoon on Route 202 South and Route 63 West. This will surely improve both safety and traffic flow.

Periodic lane closures are also planned in the following locations next week, Monday through Friday, July 11-15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
            • Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) between Sumneytown Pike and Knapp Road.
            • Route 63 (Welsh Road) between Stump Road and Bell Run Boulevard.
            • Route 152 (Limekiln Pike) between Stump Road and Route 202 (Butler Avenue).
            • Upper State Road between County Line and Pickertown roads.
            • County Line Road between Stump and Upper State roads.

Just as a reminder, other travel restrictions remain in effect, including the closure of Wells Road between Lower State and Turk roads; permanent closure of Detweiler Road between Stump and Upper State roads; and the closure of Lower State Road to northbound traffic between Bristol and Almshouse roads.

The Blue Route
Nighttime lane closures are planned Wednesday and Thursday, July 13-14, for bridge construction at the I-76 interchange (Exit 16). One of two northbound lanes on the northbound side of the highway will be closed at the bridge from 10 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

Drivers also should be alert for slow-moving construction vehicles entering and leaving the northbound express lane (on the southbound side of the highway) between the I-76 (Exit 16) and Germantown Pike (Exit 20) interchanges.

Finally, Ridge Pike motorists will encounter slowdowns and intermittent traffic stoppages between Chemical and Alan Wood roads in Plymouth Township from 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, until 6 a.m. Thursday, July 14, for ramp construction at the I-476 overpass.

Northeast Extension
Demolition and excavation work is planned at the Jolly Road Bridge this week, Monday through Friday, July 11-15, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Also, Jolly Road will close to local traffic for nighttime work from 6 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Drivers on the Turnpike's mainline will find single-lane closures from 9 p.m. through 6 a.m.

  • North Wales Road: PECO's contractor will be installing poles and cables Thursday, June 2, and Friday, June 3, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic will be flagger-controlled with intermittent lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Skippack Pike: PECO's contractor will be installing poles and cables Thursday, June 2, and Friday, June 3, between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic will be flagger-controlled with intermittent lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Additional utility work, excavation and general construction are planned in Plymouth, Whitpain and Worcester townships; however, these activities are not expected to impact traffic.

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
Please read the notes below from Gwen Douse, a neighbor who has been following the 202 construction developments and traffic related issues for some time. There is an opportunity for us to write to suggest a change in the current plans...take advantage of the moment if you can.

I also wanted to update you on the sale of homes within our neighborhood. There have been quite a few sold lately, I'm happy to report! I believe 5 homes have sold in the last few months and at least 3 more are on the market now. (This is an estimate...I apologize if the numbers are not quite correct.)  The closing prices are not listed for all of them but the listing range goes from $635, 000 - $729, 500. Actual selling prices are not public info until after closing. Just thought you might be interested and encouraged to see this info on our beautiful neighborhood.

If you have new neighbors move in next to you, please offer them this email address to be added to the "newsletter" listing. It is a great communication tool for new folks!

Thank you and happy summertime!

----- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Neighbors,
We are faced with a potentially urgent situation. Part of section 65S of 202, the section 1,000 feet just south of us on 202, which originally was
planned to be 4 lanes all the way through, will narrow from 4 lanes to 2 lanes causing an hour glass configuration and potentially a very huge
traffic jam daily, especially at rush hour. The result could once again be that frustrated drivers use our neighborhood as a cut through as they seek relief from the traffic. I had written to several public officials a while back when we were informed about this situation and informed you, but apparently nothing has changed to date. Now that construction is ongoing, we just learned the real reason for this change-reduced funding! Below please find a copy of a letter I sent to our local officials and Senator Bob Casey, as well as responses from Kate Harper and our township manger Larry Comunale about this problem. I also asked Larry Comunale to send a copy of my email to the Board of Supervisors as the email address listed on the township website did not work for me.

Your voices need to be heard as well! Only a few neighbors responded last time which resulted in no change to date. Email addresses are listed below to contact these officials.  Please take a few minutes to write to express your opinion about this situation and feel free to use any of my letter as a guide. If you know neighbors who are not on this contact list, please let them know as well. We will all be affected. We really need to let our officials know that funding MUST be found immediately to restore 65S to four lanes so we can maintain safety and a peaceful environment in our neighborhood.Your prompt attention and time to this matter WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. If we don't act as a community now, we will live with the consequences.
Thank you for your time,
Gwen Douse

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Public and Elected Officials;
Just 1,000 feet south of our development, Gwynedd Knoll, the newly expanded Route 202 highway is designed to narrow from 4 lanes to 2 lanes. Despite PENNDOT's claim that it shouldn't cause a problem, and drivers will have fair warning, etc., etc, etc., from a practical viewpoint, this hour glass traffic pattern will have an obviously highly negative impact on the flow of traffic, with drivers looking for alternatives to stalled traffic. That means, our neighborhood will once again become a cut through for those frustrated drivers. For years, our neighborhood had been promised relief from the 202 traffic that has flowed through our neighborhood causing a disruption to our peaceful community, and, more importantly, increased the potential for safety hazards to our neighbors. Children waiting at bus stops are at increased safety risk, as well as bikers, walkers, and runners. My husband and I personally have been forced to hop onto curbs with our dogs on numerous occasion, as cut-through drivers speed through our streets. In 2008, we expressed deep concern for this traffic pattern with the hope that PENNDOT will keep 202 to a 4 lane highway through that segment. We recently learned that NOTHING has changed.
PLEASE ADDRESS THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION NOW, KEEPING THE NEW 202 TO 4 LANES IN THIS SEGMENT, FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS.
Thank you very much for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Gwen Douse

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Senator Casey,
I live in a neighborhood called Gwynedd Knoll in Lower Gwyned township, a suburb west of  Philadelphia. I would like to make you aware of the situation regarding the  202 highway section 65S just adjacent to our neighborhood. Originally this section of highway was slated to become a 4 lane highway from 2 lanes; our neighborswere greatly appreciative about this improvement as many drivers had been using our peaceful, lovely neighborhood to escape the heavy traffic on this highway. The cut through traffic caused safety issue for children waiting at the bus stops, walkers, runners. There were many times my husband and I would have to hop onto the curb with our dogs to avoid being hit by one of these speeding cut through drivers!

A while back we learned that part of 65S would remain a 2 lane highway, causing an hour glass configuration 1,000 feet south of our development. We wrote letters in protest then and hoped things would change. Unfortunately we just learned that 65S cannot remain a 4 lane highway because of lack of funding.
Despite PENNDOT's claim that there will not be an adverse affect on traffic for many various  reasons they offered, from a practical viewpoint, this hour glass traffic pattern will have an obviously highly negative impact on the flow of traffic, with drivers looking for alternatives to stalled traffic. (As drivers, we have all sat in traffic jams as lanes narrow, despite all the signage warning of this narrowing, etc.).
That means, our neighborhood will once again become a cut through for those frustrated drivers resulting in increased unsafe conditions as more drivers seek to use 202. We have been told his lucky we are, but this is luck, currently it is BAD luck!
PLEASE do what you can to restore thus funding and the 4 lane highway throughout 65S.
Thank you very much for your much needed prompt attention to this matter!
Sincerely, Gwen Douse

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Gwen,
Thanks for writing again about your concern over the construction schedule for Route 202. I will pass along your concerns to PENNDOT. By the way, it is quite true, as Larry Comunale noted, that we don't have the funding for more work on Route 202 at this time. Although it might not feel like it, this part of Montgomery County has been very fortunate in securing much funding for many highway projects in our area. The construction is a mess, but the results will make the traffic flow much more smoothly along 202, removing the incentive to cut through neighborhoods like Gwynedd Knoll. Thanks for the timely reminder about this aspect of the project. Kate

Gwen,

I forwarded your message on to the Board.  We all agree that Section 65S should proceed as originally planned.  Unfortunately, there is no funding. The Township has had our traffic Consultants look at the plans for the southern terminus of the construction.  They do not believe there will be a bottleneck.  Also, with the completion of the Meetinghouse Road relocation (thank you Kate), it should take some cut-through traffic  off of Gwynedd Knoll.  I will check on the e-mail.

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
The Salvitti's are having a moving sale on Saturday, June 25 at 1292 Turnbury Lane from 8 am to 1pm. They have furniture and household goods.  Please stop by and find some treasures - and if you want to set up a sale of your own, there will be people coming in the neighborhood so it is a good time. Have you noticed that several of the homes in the neighborhood have sold recently? Encouraging!

I have a few contractor recommendations to pass on to you from other neighbors. Keep sending me names...everyone appreciates some guidance in selecting a contractor.
Happy summer to you all!

Hi Carol:  I just wanted to give you the name of a business who recently replaced our roof.  Their name is Narvon Run Builders, LLC.  You can reach them via Gideon Lapp, 717-355-5570 or 5528. We can't say enough about them. They are extremely fair priced, efficient, pleasant, and do outstanding work.  They arrive on time, put in a full day's work and are extremely clean and neat.  They do roofs, framing, remodeling, new houses and additions.

They have done work for others that we know and come highly recommended.  We were completely satisfied with their work and work ethics.

From Donna Palmieri:

I wanted to share the name of a person some of us in the neighborhood have used for painting and pressure washing.

Very reasonable and he did a terrific job in painting and sealing our garage floor and pressure our front walk and the concrete around our pool.

Looks like new!

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
Julia Wagner,  a neighbor on Tanglewood , asked me to forward this to you all. They are holding an event this weekend to raise money for research into Lyme disease - something that has affected a few families in our neighborhood.
Thank you,

MontCoLyme, a non-profit started by one of our neighborhood families, the Wagners, has helped many many families, youth and individuals with health issues in our community and is holding a major awareness and fundraiser event, Lyme Light Fashion Show on Saturday, June 11th.  It is being sponsored by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Center of Integrative Medicine and will be at the Jefferson alumni hall, center city Philadelphia. See attached flyer and www.montcolyme.org for details and on-line tickets.

This event will feature YOUTH and CHILDREN impacted by chronic Lyme disease and educate through their stories.  Half the models are donated by the John Robert Powers modeling agency, and half are the Lyme Youth. Stores from Old Navy to Banana Republic and Norma Kamali will be featured.

This is a tremendous opportunity to get in and enjoy Philadelphia, and learn something that unfortunately we all need to be aware of in our area, that could in fact by life-saving for our kids, and for adults.  Many children with undetected Lyme disease present with issues like ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, auditory processing issues, behavioral issues like anxiety, depression, bipolar, and oppositional defiance.  Their personalities change, and their school performance suffers when these conditions go mis/undiagnosed.

Come support MontCoLyme on Saturday, if you can't make it, please consider a donation to fund the ongoing education and outreach of this group. Donations are tax-deductible.  If you want to be included on MontCoLyme's email list, send an email to montcolyme@aol.com   See attached flyer and donation form.

neighborhood alert!

Dear neighbors,
First the ALERT news...several cars on Uxbridge Lane had things stolen during the late hours of Saturday night. All the cars were in the driveway but unlocked. The cars were not damaged - just valuable items taken. So this is your reminder to please lock your cars each night - it has been quite awhile since this occurred the last time but it is easy to prevent. The LG police are working on the case. Please call them if your car has anything stolen or you have other information.

On to the better news below: Linda Callegari has worked for several years trying to get Penndot to "give back" a little since they have taken over and restructured our Hancock entryway. She has finally gotten a yes response! See the note below. There is also a second note indicating the sound wall schedule. Many thanks to Linda for pursuing this faithfully!

Regarding entryways and landscaping - we will be sending out the annual request for funds to keep our entryways looking nice. This year flowers are only being planted at the Meetinghouse road of course. Please watch for another note regarding the specifics for this year. We also hope to fund the purchase of new signs with this money.

Dear Neighbors,

I have been asking Penndot for several years to respond to my request that they reposition some of the shrubs that the Twp is requiring of them to plant along the LGT side of 202 to the entrance area at Hancock, in front of our two entrance openings. See below that we have been fortunate to get just what we want. I also asked whether there was a possibility of them somehow putting the name of our neighborhood on the walls at the entrance, but that is not possible. He suggests that at some point we get signs that we can just put in the ground so perhaps this is something we can do after they have finished their work...a fundraiser? I think the shrubs will give us a nice entrance appearance, blend in with the other shrubs & trees that will be planted on our side of 202 & best of all, it didn't cost us a dime!

Regards,

Linda Callegari

Claudia Way

Linda - Having checked into your comment about the shrubs, we found correspondence from Gannett Flemming indicating that some of the sound wall shrubbery is to be moved and planted in front of the community entrance walls on Hancock. It appears that 8 plantings will be put there. (This is a good thing -- the correspondence -- because there are numerous requests coming in across the project for things to be added, changed, etc. and, because of budgetary constraints, we unfortunately are turning most of them down.)

If your other request - "entrance sign adhered to the wall" -  is asking if a sign may be affixed to the sound wall where it meets your entrance, that is something that cannot be done. Go with the stake-mounted sign. If you have future questions or concerns, feel free to write back. I may not always get you the answer you want, but I'll get you an answer nonetheless. (Penndot official)

Today's email from Penndot:

Linda - Field office reports that the walls are schedule to be completed by late fall. It is likely that there will be some lag time between the installation of the posts and installation of the wall panels themselves, as is often the case. This is because in general, the panels need to be constructed and shipped and installed in essentially a continuous process; They don't like to build the panels and have them lay around because they are expensive and because they can become damaged when stored too long. So what usually happens is that the foundations for each of the posts are dug and poured first, then they come by and install the posts. When all the posts are in place, the panels can then be installed.

Landscaping is among the last items addressed on these projects.

In any event, I would suggest that your organization plan to get your sign next spring.
