For those of you who are new to the neighborhood, Julia and her family have suffered from Lyme's disease in the past years and she has really gotten involved in the effort to fight for recognition/diagnosis and spread information about the disease.  This survey is being conducted by the Pennsylvania Lyme disease Awareness Committee (PLDAC).  The PDLAC is a collaboration of the Chester/Delaware Farm Bureau, the Lyme Disease Association of Southeastern PA, Inc. and the Chester County health Department.  The committee is dedicated to educating residents on the risks, prevention, symptoms, and treatment options of Lyme disease and promoting federal and state legislative initiatives that provide funds for research and treatment of Lyme disease and protection of physicians.

Results from the survey will be used to educate policymakers about the true impact of Lyme disease in the daily life of Pennsylvania residents and help further educate residents about the disease.

I have just one note to pass on today...a giving opportunity our neighbor Eva O'Brien is coordinating:

 We are collecting used DVDs to donate to the local VA Hospital.  Would you mind sending an email to the hood asking anyone who wants to donate used dvds that they no longer want. The movies will be for soldiers to watch so no "kid" movies please. They can put them on my back porch at 1424 Cambridge Dr. - we have a For Sale sign out front.  We are collecting until Wednesday the 21st.

I would like to wish you all a very Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas! The neighborhood is looking quite festive with all the lights up. Enjoy this season with your family and friends. (:

PRESS RELEASE

November 11, 2011

                                                    

On Nov 5^th at 10:00 am police received information from the parents of two juvenile males regarding a suspicious incident that occurred in the 600 block of Cathcart Rd. The boys reported to their parents that while they were walking along, a tan mid-sized car drove past the boys, and then turned around.  The driver, described as a white male in his 30's or 40's, short salt and pepper hair, with an Irish accent asked the boys to get into his car. The boys ran home and reported the incident to their parent.

 

After this incident was reported, police received information regarding two other suspicious vehicles driving through different neighborhoods in Whitpain Township. The first suspicious vehicle occurred on Sunday Nov 6^th at approximately 3:00 pm and was described as a tan or gold vehicle, possibly a Taurus with driver door damage, driving slowly in the 800 block of Valley Road. The driver was described as an older, possibly a w/m with a darker complexion.

 

The second incident occurred two weeks prior to the incident on Cathcart Rd. In that incident a homeowner reported a gray or cream colored vehicle was driving slowly in the area of the 1500 block of Penllyn Pk. The driver of this vehicle was reported as a w/m approximately 40 yrs old and the resident stated that it appeared as if he was staring at her 10 year old son. No children were approached or spoken to in either of the second two incidents. Whitpain Township Police are requesting that anyone with additional information regarding these incident, to please contact the Police Department at 610-279-9033.

 

Parents are asked to speak to their children about safety tips for when they are out.  Stay with friends while outside playing, don't talk with strangers, don't ever get into a car with someone that you do not know,  if someone is following them either by foot or in a car, run in another direction. If someone does approach them, make sure they report it to you or another trusted adult. Heather has had a good response so far, with at least 35 children attending, but there are definitely some families out there that still haven't responded.  Please see the flyer attached for information. Just returned from the Township Supervisor's meeting and thought I'd jot a few notes down to share with neighbors:

• Rep. Kate Harper was there and she provided us with information about the sound barriers & what she could find out from Penndot on very little notice.
• According to Kate, Penndot says that the red walls are made of a special material that is designed to reflect the noise since sound will bounce between the two red walls. The roughness of the red brick is part of this sound abatement and therefore, possibly painting them beige would take away the benefit they now have. Kate will ask Penndot about this.
• The beige walls are not designed to the same specifications as the red walls as they do not need to be as reflective of the sound since there are no walls on the Upper Gwynedd side at that location.
• Kate indicated that the current beige walls will be painted red to match the current red brick walls. Evidently, the contract for the paint and labor was let a year ago so it's already in the pipeline and would be expensive to change the order. A neighbor asked whether Penndot would be painting in the white areas to make it look like the same brick as on the current red walls. Kate will check into this.
• The Township thought that as long as the neighborhood was happy with the beige walls on the inside, we would not care one way or another what the road side looked like. They indicated that it was a decision that the Supervisors, Larry Comunale and Upper Gwynedd made with Penndot. One of our neighbors remembers that Penndot indicated that the road side would be a different color/texture.
• Kate indicated that Penndot estimates that it would cost $55,000 to paint the red brick walls beige. This is just a quick estimate and not a firm quote. Due to budget issues, she does  not think they would be willing to spend the money needed to do this.The Supervisors were not sure that Upper Gwynedd would want to paint the walls beige.
• There will be no meeting at the walls with the Supervisors at this point. For those who provided an email at the meeting, the Supervisors will stay in touch with them with the answers that Kate is checking into.
• There were several neighbors present who voiced no problem with the color of the walls. The Township indicated that Upper Gwynedd has not had any complaints from their citizens about the sound barriers at all.
• Kate indicated that we should be glad that we have sound barriers and don't get all upset by the color. She pointed out that sound barriers are very expensive and Penndot is trying to cut down on the use of them wherever they can so we need to be mindful that we are lucky to have them.
• Neither Kate nor the Supervisors knew that the landscape plan from Penndot only provided landscaping & ivy in front of the current beige walls. That the red brick walls will only have ivy planted at the base (street side only).

I'm sorry I could not offer a more positive report. There were about 8 Gwynedd Knoll residents present at the meeting tonight. I don't know if more people would have made a difference in the outcome, but certainly it couldn't have hurt. I encourage you all to send an email to the Supervisors and Kate Harper about how you feel about the sound barriers. They are getting very divergent comments pro and con and so it is not clear in their minds about how we feel. I guess it couldn't get much worse for those of us who hate the red walls.

Dear neighbors,
There is a regular Lower Gwynedd Township Supervisor's meeting tomorrow night (Tuesday, October 11) at 7:30 pm at the township offices. Several neighbors are planning to attend to bring up the sound wall issues. Please join them if you can. Linda is still requesting a meeting here in the neighborhood - I will keep you posted on that when it occurs.

Also, the Supervisors email addresses have been found - here they are so you can write a note expressing your opinions on the sound walls.
