neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
Please see the notes below regarding a conversation Gwen Douse (a concerned neighbor) had with the township. She is encouraging all of us to speak up about the issue of adding a traffic light at Meetinghouse Rd.

Secondly, I have only had one person offer to help with the Halloween parade - can anyone else help organize this event? It is so much easier with a couple people helping! There was a big turnout last year - please help us continue to have this tradition. (:

I've had a request for preschool recommendations from Penny and Pete Zografakis. Would you please send your recommendations to them at:  pzografakis@starcite.com.

Lastly, Kathy Mignone, another neighbor, would like to remind you about a holiday shopping opportunity. (:

Dear Neighbors,
Below is my response to Madeline Fausto's email (below my response) concerning traffic lights at Rose Lane/63 and Meetinghouse Road/202.   Ms Fausto is PENNDOT'S representative for our section of 202/63 improvements, who attends our meetings. It was a very disappointing response as far as our safety is concerned. Please feel free to send your comments to Madeline Fausto and the individuals that were cc on my e-mail, listed below. The more neighbors they hear from, the better our chance of improving safety issues for us all.
Thank you,
Gwen Douse

P.S.  This is a response added after this conversation:

Please add the latest communication from Board Supervisor Ed Brandt to the e-mail I sent you yesterday.

To All,I support the continued diligent of Gwen Douse staying on top of of PENNDOT about the signal at Meetinghouse and 202.I do not think a Temporary light at Rose will happen.
We all predicted that a Light at the New Meetinghouse and 202 will eventually be needed and Lower Gwynedd Twp. has stated that we will pay for it, as is always the case for New Traffic lights in a Twp.
We,the Township, our Manager,Elected Officials and State Rep. Harper will continue to monitor and be involved with this Major project.

Dear Ms. Fausto,

Thank you for your response. We do appreciate your willingness to coordinate efforts with our development, who is one of the hardest hit during this lengthy construction period.

I would like to emphasize, however, at our last meeting with PENNDOT, that we were assured there would be an actual traffic light, not just a blinking light when Meetinghouse Road was improved; this confirmation of an actual traffic light at 202 and Meetinghouse was repeated SEVERAL times at the meeting when several neighbors expressed concern. This a VERY dangerous intersection, especially turning left onto 202 South, and with the increase in the volume/speed of traffic due to enlargement of 202 it will be even more dangerous! IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED IF YOU CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS SITUATION IN LIGHT OF CHANGED TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND RECONSIDER PLACING THAT MUCH  NEEDED, PROMISED TRAFFIC LIGHT THERE.

Also, I noticed that the study at Rose Lane was conducted 3 years ago-much has changed/worsened in terms of traffic patterns since then. All that I requested at this time is a temporary light since it is one of the few streets we have to exit/enter our community for the next 2 years!

Thank you again for your reconsideration and I will forward your response to the neighborhood as well.

Best wishes,
Gwen Douse

Dear Ms. Douse,

This is in response to your September 17th email.  During design, we had extensive coordination efforts with Lower Gwynedd Township and the Gwynedd Knoll community relating to the US 202 widening project in an effort to identify and alleviate traffic related impacts to the community.  The inclusion of the turning restrictions at Dekalb Pike and Hancock during this recent stage of construction is an example of a mitigation measure included into the Section 65N project at the request of the Gwynedd Knoll community and supported by Lower Gwynedd Township.   As you are aware, the US 202 Section 65N project is well into full construction and is scheduled for completion in the Spring of 2012.   The ongoing work on Welsh Road is included and needed for the Section 65N improvement project.

The SR 2016 Section OFF project, which includes the relocation of Meetinghouse Road, was recently authorized to begin construction.  The installation of a traffic signal at the new Meetinghouse Road intersection is not planned as part of the Section OFF project.  The volumes at the existing Meetinghouse Road intersection with Dekalb Pike do not meet the minimum traffic signal warrant requirements to support the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection.    The Section OFF project will not significantly impact traffic along Dekalb Pike as all lanes of traffic will be in operation during the project and the section of work along Dekalb Pike is relatively short.  The relocated Meetinghouse Road intersection will include a dedicated left turn lane along southbound Dekalb Pike.  The Section OFF project, and the subsequent US 202 Section 65S project, provides the opportunity to monitor the traffic utilizing the relocated roadway and to collect actual future traffic volumes at the intersection.  This provides the Department the opportunity to compare the volumes to the traffic signal warrants potentially providing the opportunity to install a full traffic signal under future conditions.   A flashing traffic signal beacon is currently planned for the intersection under the US 202 Section 65S project.   Results of the signal warrant analyses at this location under Section OFF and Section 65S were shared and discussed with Lower Gwynedd Township and their traffic engineers at project meetings in the past.

Regarding your concerns about traffic at Rose Lane, the Department conducted a traffic study in December of 2007 in response to community concerns of traffic at the intersection.  A traffic count was conducted on November 8, 2007 as part of the analysis.  The count indicated that traffic volumes exiting Rose Lane at the intersection were low and significantly under the required traffic signal warrants.  This condition would be anticipated to remain under the Section 65N construction conditions due to the closure of Gwynedd View Lane and the reduction of access into the Gwynedd View community.   If the current conditions are felt to be significantly different than those assumed in our analysis, the Township could request for the Department to conduct an additional investigation at the intersection regarding the potential for a temporary traffic signal installation.

We appreciate your patience through the construction period.  For concerns and comments regarding the ongoing construction under Section 65N, please contact our Construction Manager, Bernie Rohe at (267)613-8220.  For questions regarding the status of Section 65S, please feel free to contact me or Troy Illig at (215)209-1208.

Dear Ms. Fausto,

Below is a letter I sent to Larry Comunale and Kate Harper and I was told my request for the traffic lights needs to be sent to you, as representative of PENNDOT. I also have been informed that drivers are driving dangerously around the pork chop and crossing 202 onto Hancock; it needs to be extended/modified to prevent this from occurring.

Please respond to message below.

Thank you,

Gwen Douse

It feels as though Gwynedd Knoll is now officially under siege-63, 309, and 202 are torn-up. We can't go anywhere without major traffic problems. I feel sorry for anyone planning to put their house on the market as I am sure this current situation is affecting home property values in our neighborhood and will for the foreseeable future. I am very perplexed why PENNDOT would work on all 3 arteries at the same time after years of doing nothing. Based on all the meetings we have attended over the years, I thought this project was going to be done in stages.

At this point we need IMMEDIATE relief since this project looks like it will be going on for some time. At the last meeting we were promised a traffic light at Meetinghouse Road and 202-this should happen now! Also at Rose Lane and 63 a temporary traffic light would at least allow us to safely exit our neighborhood.

Thank you for any consideration/action to help alleviate our situation.

Gwen Douse

Left Turn Restrictions Start Tuesday at Route 202/63 Intersection in Montgomery County

Restrictions Continue Next Week on Route 202 and Route 63

KING OF PRUSSIA – Motorists approaching the intersection of Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) and Route 63 (Welsh Road) in Montgomery and Upper Gwynedd townships, Montgomery County will encounter significant traffic congestion and delays beginning Tuesday (Oct. 5) when both roads are narrowed and left turn lanes are temporarily eliminated at three of the four approaches for construction to widen the intersection, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

Beginning Tuesday (Oct. 5) at approximately 9 a.m., work crews will shift traffic on Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) and Route 63 (Welsh Road) into new alignments approaching the intersection, eliminating the separate left turn lanes in both directions on Route 63 and on southbound Route 202. The left turn lane on northbound Route 202 will remain open.

PennDOT will reopen the left turn lanes as soon as possible this fall as construction progresses at the intersection.

Motorists are advised to avoid the work area if possible and use alternate routes to access either Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) or Route 63 (Welsh Road) in this area.

PennDOT is widening the intersection as part of the project to widen Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) and build the connector roadway to the new Route 202 Parkway.

In addition, daytime lane closures will continue on Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) and brief stoppages may occur on Route 63 (Welsh Road) next week (Oct. 4-8) in Upper and Lower Gwynedd townships for continuing construction to widen the highway.

Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) will be restricted to a single lane between Sumneytown Pike and Route 63 (Welsh Road), with flaggers directing an alternating lane of northbound or southbound traffic through the work area Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Crews are continuing to install sub-surface utilities.

Drivers also may encounter delays during periodic traffic stoppages of up to 15 minutes on Route 63 (Welsh Road) between Stump Road and Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for utility construction related to the widening of Route 63 where it will intersect with the new Route 202 Parkway.

Under the $17.7 million roadway improvement project, PennDOT is widening and improving two miles of Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) from Swedesford Road to Route 309, and building a new road to connect Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) with the new Route 202 Parkway, which also is under construction.

The construction schedule is dependent on the weather.

PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on major highways before heading out.

neighborhood news

Dear neighbors,
I have two news items for you this time...and no traffic alerts! (:  The first is a request for help and the other is a recommendation for a painter if you are interested. (see below).
We need a new coordinator for the annual Halloween parade. Trudy has organized the parade for several years and is ready to "pass on the baton" this year. It would be great to have a mom of young children volunteer so that you will have family that is interested in participating for at least a few years. Unless maybe we have a grandmother who would like to coordinate? (:  Trudy will be glad to share her tips and advice on organizing the parade. It has always been fun to provide this activity for the kids...please consider volunteering.

On the subject of the parade this year...I recieved a note that there will be a new family event on October 24 at LG school. This would normally be the date for the parade here. Would you please let me know if having the parade on an alternate date would work for you? Perhaps Saturday the 24th in late afternoon or how about on Halloween, Sunday the 31st so you could parade before trick or treating? Looking forward to your feedback.
Thank you,

I have a new name for our contractor list - a painter and I must say, of all those we have used over the years, he is by far the best.  Meticulous, thorough, and very easy to have around.  And, his crew are all terrific, too. His name is Bill Spurlin - (William Spurlin Painting,  www.spurlinpainting.com). Phone #215-852-1710.

neighborhood news traffic alert

Dear neighbors,
This is another notice about work being done this week on 202. Looks similar to last week's but please read through and be aware of potential delays. Also, see the note below from Gwen Douse regarding contact info for any questions or concerns you may have about the construction. One neighbor has already written about people ignoring the porkchop and had a response from the township. Let's keep them informed of any problems! And maybe good things too. (:

Lastly, see a note from Linda Callegari about some events coming up at Pennypacker Mills park. They always have interesting and educational things to do.

Daytime Single Lane Conditions on Route 202 in Upper Gwynedd and Lower Gwynedd Townships

Stoppages of up to 15 minutes also possible on Route 63

KING OF PRUSSIA –Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper and Lower Gwynedd townships, Montgomery County, will be limited to a single lane of traffic between Sumneytown Pike and Route 63 (Welsh Road) next week (Sept. 20-24) during the mid-day hours for continuing construction to widen the highway to five lanes, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

Flaggers will direct an alternating single lane of northbound or southbound traffic through the work area Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Significant delays are likely during these construction activities to install utilities beneath Route 202 (DeKalb Pike).

Drivers in that area also may continue to encounter delays during periodic stoppages of up to 15 minutes on Route 63 (Welsh Road) between Stump Road and Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for utility construction for the widening of Route 63 where it will intersect with the new Route 202 Parkway.

Motorists are advised to add extra time for travel through the work area, or to avoid the area if possible during construction.

This work is part of the $17.7 million project to widen and improve two miles of Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) from Swedesford Road to Route 309, and to connect Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) with the new Route 202 Parkway, which also is under construction.

All planned operations are weather permitting.

Dear Neighbors,

With fall fast approaching, I thought I'd pass along some great family-fun opportunities that are being offered at Pennypacker Mills. The Mills is a Montgomery County historic site just off of Rt. 73 a few miles west of Skippack, so about 30 mins. away. All these programs are absolutely FREE and are appropriate for all ages. Why not take advantage of the tax dollars you pay Montgomery County and get some of the benefits!

Storytelling: George Washington and the General's Dog

Sat., Oct. 2 @ 1 pm

Hear a Revolutionary War tale, written for young children, of how a British General's dog became lost and ended up in General Washington's camp at Pennypacker Mills after the Battle of Germantown in October 1777. This fascinating, true story gives us insight into Washington's honesty and the relationship these two warring military commanders had. We will also have Revolutionary War artifacts that were left behind by Washington's troops on display and will take a walk on the property to visit the grave of one of his officers who had been wounded at Germantown and later died at the Mills.

 Haunting Stories by the Bonfire!

Sat., Oct. 2 @ 7 pm

Bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on as our storyteller takes you back in time. Hear stories collected from the memories of local townspeople in the Perkiomen Valley when Samuel Pennypacker, then Governor of Pennsylvania, wrote many of them down as a way to preserve the oral history of the Valley. "Haunting Stories by the Bonfire" tells of everyday people who experienced haunting stories of ghosts, strange illnesses, accidents, and other phenomena. Our storyteller will spin his stories by the light of the bonfire with the crackling of the flames and the rustling of the trees in the night air.

 All Hallow's Eve Fall Festival

Sat., Oct. 16 1 to 4 pm

Bring the family to Pennypacker Mills for an old-fashioned fall festival. Take a tractor-pulled hayride through the meadow and see the beautiful fall colors in the trees, pick you favorite pumpkin and paint a  face on it, make several make-it, take-it fall kid crafts, do gravestone rubbing, play bean bag toss, jump in our haypile, and wear your Halloween costume an extra day this year. Try your hand at shucking corn the way farmers did one-hundred years ago. By plucking off the dry corn kernals from the cob, they made feed for the chickens. Making apple cider was a two-step process and you can do both! First, toss apples into the shredder and make a mash. Then, press the mash until the juice runs out and makes cider! Free refreshments are available and no, we don't serve the homemade cider!

Any questions, please contact Pennypacker Mills at 610-287-9349.

News for Immediate Release

Sept. 9, 2010

Intermittent Nighttime Travel Restrictions on Route 202 in Upper Gwynedd and Lower Gwynedd Townships for Traffic Pattern Change
http://www.dot.state.pa.us/icons/ecblank.gifCrews to restripe Route 202 at Hancock Road Monday Night to Install New Traffic Pattern for Road Widening

King of Prussia – Motorists traveling onhttp://www.dot.state.pa.us/icons/ecblank.gif Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) in Upper and Lower Gwynedd townships, Montgomery County, will encounter intermittent travel restrictions from 7 p.m. Monday (Sept. 13) to 6 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 14) as crews establish a new traffic pattern that will include temporary turning restrictions at the intersection with Hancock Road at the entrance to Gwynedd Knoll, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today.

Periodic slowdowns and brief traffic stoppages may occur during the overnight operation on Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) between Sumneytown Pike and Route 63 (Welsh Road) for the removal of existing traffic lines, painting of new lines, and other activities related to instituting a traffic pattern change.

The planned activities are weather dependent and may be postponed until the following evening in the event of rain.

The pattern change will shift Route 202's two travel lanes two feet to the west and establish temporary "right turn in, right turn out" restrictions at the intersection with Hancock Road at the entrance to the Gwynedd Knoll development on the east side of Route 202 (DeKalb Pike). Once the new pattern is in place Tuesday morning (Sept. 14), motorists will be allowed to make right turns only from northbound Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) onto eastbound Hancock Road, and from westbound Hancock Road onto northbound Route 202 (DeKalb Pike).

Left turns from westbound Hancock Road onto southbound Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) and from southbound Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) onto eastbound Hancock Road will be prohibited under the new pattern.

Eastbound Hancock Road motorists approaching Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) will only be permitted to turn left or right onto Route 202 (DeKalb Pike). Eastbound Hancock Road motorists will not be permitted to cross over and enter Hancock Road on the east side of the highway. Turns from Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) north or south onto westbound Hancock Road will not be affected by the traffic pattern change.

The turning restrictions will remain in place until mid-2011 to allow crews to construct the next phase of widening on Route 202 (DeKalb Pike), which includes reconstruction of Route 202's (DeKalb Pike) intersection with Hancock Road on the east side of the highway.

This work is part of the $17.7 million project to widen and improve two miles of Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) from Swedesford Road to Route 309, and to connect Route 202 (DeKalb Pike) with the new Route 202 Parkway, which also is under construction. Construction is scheduled to finish in May 2012.

Dear neighbors,

Hope you had a great summer...and now a smooth transition back to the routines of fall. I am passing on several recommendations for landscapers and contractors in the notes below. Thanks to those who took the time to write about them! There is also a note about a trainer interested in starting a workout group...in the early morning! Check it out...

And lastly, our neighbor Eva O'Brien is holding another BIG garage sale this Saturday (tomorrow), Sept 11 from 8 to 12. She has lots of furniture items, holiday decor, and miscellaneous great stuff! Come by and find a treasure....(: Her address is 1424 Cambridge Dr.

From Rhona Fromm:

A friend of mine is a personal trainer and would like to offer small groups of women an early morning outdoor workout before the kids get off to school/before work (or after they get off if it works better). Please let me know if there's any interest. It's a boot camp type of workout. She's flexible on time...Could do 6:30 a.m. or 8 a.m. Probably would cost $15/participant. She's really good. If you're on Facebook, check her out at "Tailored Fitness by Carly".

Testimonial: We have had quite a bit of landscaping done by Marty Levin and his aptly named company:  "Passionate about Landscaping."  Because of the satisfaction we have had with them, we feel that we should mention and recommend them to others. Marty Levin is friendly, enthusiastic and creative.  He is easy to talk to, punctual and reliable.  He has good landscaping ideas and is willing to work with his clients.  He is a good judge of character and the crew and equipment he has assembled reflects his enthusiasm. The men always conduct themselves as gentlemen.  They are polite and courteous, skillful and artistic.  They seem interested in their jobs and can often be seen discussing what needs to be done.

We feel you will have the same reaction that we are having and will be more passionate about your landscaping too.
