neighborhood dinner

Dear neighbors,
Hope you all are shoveled out from the last big snow since the next one is coming soon! This has been the snowiest year that I have lived here...hard to imagine it really will melt away and be hot someday. (: 

Attached is a flyer about the Progressive dinner this year. The theme is a Night in Napa Valley. Everyone is invited - it is a great way to meet some of your new neighbors and catch up with those you haven't seen for awhile. And if it snows, we don't have to cancel since we are all close by! If you would like to host, you don't need to cook any food. If you don't like to cook, let me know and I may be able to have you contribute ingredients for the main dish as your way to help. Please respond to me in the next couple of weeks so I can organize who is doing what. Please consider coming - we would love to see you!

See below for a note about a job opportunity with a neighbor. Please refer anyone you know who may be interested to Tish directly. She suggested to me that perhaps a grad student might be a good fit.

My name is Tish Baldez. I live on Claudia Way. I own a small consulting firm which I work primarily from my home (my work takes me overseas with my clients and I have offices at my client sites). I am looking for a personal assistant (both executive/business experience and some household management). I need someone who is very organized, proficient with Microsoft computer programs, understands/can support a website and who has experience in marketing.

Hi, neighbors,
We had a good meeting last week to plan our annual progressive dinner. Many thanks to those who came to help! Please save the date of February 27 for a Night in Napa! We will have a California wine country theme and will try out a few new ideas for the format. Do you know anyone who could run a wine tasting of a few wines and cheeses for our appetizer hour? We thought that might be a enjoyable addition. Here is a description of how the dinner works:

If you have not had the opportunity to attend in previous years, here is how it works: We meet at one home for appetizers, we then divide into groups of 8-12 for the dinner entrée in different neighborhood homes, then after the entree we all come together again at one home for dessert. It is a tremendous way to chase away the winter doldrums, reconnect with neighbors, and meet those new to the neighborhood.

If you volunteer your home to host one of the gatherings, you don't have to supply food. Those not hosting will be asked to provide an appetizer, dessert, entrée, or side dish to be brought to one of the host homes the day of the dinner. Entrée and side dish recipes will be provided for the cooks. Everyone brings their own choice of drink. ( We will try to add the option of bringing main dish ingredients to a cook's home to relieve those who don't enjoy cooking the main dish.)

I would like to get paper flyers out to the mailboxes this year to advertise the dinner. Would you please let me know if you are a walker in the 'hood these days and would be willing to deliver some? Should be ready by the end of the week. Thanks...

We also talked about raising money for a local charitable cause by asking for contributions for the dinner. Let me know what you think about that idea and if you have a cause that would be of interest to the neighbors.

I will email the official flyer later this week but in the meantime, mark your calendars and let me know how you would like to particpate!

We can also discuss any issues in the neighborhood at the meeting. Please let me know if you have something to add. It would be great to have a crowd for this meeting - I haven't seen most of you since last year! (: Please try to let me know if you are coming but if time runs out, please just come join us!

Happy new year, neighbors!

I hope you had a good gathering of family during the holidays - and best wishes for a great new decade! January is the time of year we plan our annual progressive dinner party. So I would like to have a meeting of anyone interested in helping with ideas next week. We can also discuss any issues in the neighborhood at the meeting. Please let me know if you have something to add. It would be great to have a crowd for this meeting - I haven't seen most of you since last year! (: A little incentive...we do have a new kitchen at our house - we changed a few walls around and it made quite a difference. Come check it out at the meeting.

If you plan to tip the garbage collectors this year, I would advise NOT taping an envelope on the inside lid of your garbage receptacle.  We did this last year and when we ran down in the morning to add one more bag of garbage before pickup, our envelope was already gone.  I think the Waste Management guys in the past have sent a little holiday note in the mailbox with their name and address. 

 

Pennypacker Mills Victorian Christmas Open House

What you'll see:

• The mansion is decorated in Victorian Christmas style and was the home of PA Governor Samuel Pennypacker (1903-1907). A special second floor sitting room display of children's toys and games will be interesting for children to see. The "hot" toys of this time period were hand-cranked tin toys, teddy bears, and of course, porcelein dolls for little girls.
• Over 65 oil lamps and candles will add a soft glow to the sense of the early 1900's. (This is a great way to talk to kids about what life was like during their grandparents childhood!)
• Great decorating ideas that are easy for you to do...just in time as you decorate your own home!
• Children can share their Christmas wishes with our wonderful Victorian Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus too!
• Meet Servants and other living historians in the rooms as they portray family and friends at the Pennypacker family holiday celebration.
• Bells of Praise Bell Choir performing on the mansion porch - all day
• Montgomery County Community Choir performing on the mansion porch between 4:30 and 5:30 pm
• Clear Toy Candy Demonstration from 2 to 5 pm
• Warm cider and cookies are offered as you leave the mansion!
• See our new exhibit on children...what their lives were like during this time period. Many children had to work arduous jobs, 10 hr. days/6 days a week for 7 cents an hour while others went to school and played with toys. A very interesting look at perhaps your grandparents' lives?

Pennypacker Mills is operated by Montgomery County so your tax dollars support these programs and events...why not come by with your family and get in the holiday spirit? There are also great restaurants in Skippack for an after visit bite to eat!

 

See the wonderful Museum Shop for inexpensive gifts and decorations. If you like that "vintage" look we have all kinds of Victorian inspired ornaments, tinsel, glass beaded garland, Clear Toy Candy, Wilbur Buds, Dresden ornaments, and more!

 

Directions: Take Rt. 73 West to Skippack. We are exactly 4 miles west on Rt. 73 after the traffic light at Rt. 113 in Skippack. Make a right turn onto Haldeman Road and an immediate left into our driveway. (If you continue on Rt. 73 past the site, you will go over a bridge, which is your signal to turn around.) It takes about 30 minutes from Lower Gwynedd.
